Position description
The lab lead by Dr. Linquist focuses on the sustainable intensification of rice systems. Particular areas of emphasis include fertility management, nutrient cycling, cropping systems, water use/quality and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. No-till (NT) rice systems have the advantages of conserving water, allowing for early planting, and reducing tillage costs; however, these systems have not been evaluated in California, which produces 20% of US rice. Dr. Linquist's lab has been studying these systems for the past year, and given the encouraging results, we plan to continue in this line of research. Based on last year’s research, yields are comparable to conventional systems. Dr. Linquist currently has a PhD student studying the basic agronomy and fertility management in these systems. This post-doc position will focus on quantifying water use and GHG emissions from these systems. The position will be based at the University of California, Davis campus. Research will be conducted both at the Rice Experiment Station (located about 1.5 hours to the north) and on-farm. The post-doc will work under supervision of Dr. Bruce Linquist. Specific responsibilities will be to quantify water use and GHG emissions in NT systems compared to conventional systems in field settings. The selected candidate will be responsible for setting up and managing field trials toward this goal. This will require a lot of time in the field and the candidate must be able to work under conditions which are often hot and muddy. He/she will be expected to design experiments, conduct field and laboratory measurements, work with a gas chromatograph (GC), prepare/complete project reports, publish peer-reviewed research papers and extension articles, give presentations at scientific meetings, grower field days and grower meetings. The selected candidate may also supervise field and lab technicians and undergraduate student and be expected to work as part of a team.
Qualifications
A. Ph.D. in Agronomy, Soil Science, Environmental Studies, or closely related area at time of appointment
B. Field research experience
C. Demonstrated knowledge of water use and GHG emissions in agricultural systems
D. Be able to function and conduct research independently
E. Be able to drive and work in harsh conditions
F. Experience in quantifying water use and GHG emissions from agricultural systems
G. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
H. Strong data analysis skills and publication record
